In his homily, the Archbishop of Havana emphasized the tenderness that must define a priest’s relationship with his children, for since eternity God has thought of them to protect souls. These children, he said, are not counted by those who come to church: “a priest is a father to all, the good, the bad, the believers, the santeros, the spiritualists, the atheists, the ones of all ages.”<\/p>\n
He recognized catechists as key people on the way to the priesthood, they have been prepared for baptism, first communion, confirmation and teaching, passion and perseverance of the truths of faith, the celebration of faith, the life of faith, and prayer. “If you live the catechism is a saint, ” he said.<\/p>\n
In the midst of a celebration in which priests traditionally renew the promises of the day of their ordination, the Cuban cardinal also reminded them that the people want them holy, and a sure path of holiness is to confess as often as the spiritual Father teaches and to imitate as much as possible the good priest of Ars, St John Mary Vianney , patron saint of the parish priests and whose memory is commemorated this 4 August.<\/p>\n
The Holy Crisma, or scented oil, represents the Holy Spirit, and is given to catechins, along with their charisms, on the day of their baptism and confirmation. Similarly, priests and bishops receive it in their ordination.<\/p>\n
