We are in the hard year of the war of 1868. A group of patriots from the “always faithful” island of Cuba has started a brutal war, the first in its history, against Spanish power. At the stroke of a machete and rifle, the insurrection in the east of the country has been based. Meanwhile, the governor of Havana tries to keep the capital free of infidents, that is, Creole who conspire and organize the expansion of the battle in the West.<\/p>\n
The Volunteer Corps, an aggressive and uncompromising militia, the same one that years ago would unload its shrapnel against a theater and a caf\u00e9 where young Cubans gathered, is responsible for asking for blood every time it sees the honor of Spain “tainted”.<\/p>\n
Inocencia collects the scenes that, manipulated by the courts of the island, caused the firing of eight medical students from the University of Havana.<\/p>\n
They were young people of the Creole bourgeoisie at the time, children of families well placed in the colonial system. As Le Roy Galvez, the great scholar of 27 November, clarifies, they were neither power insurgents nor future patriots; simply young, almost teenagers still, who had played with the wagon to transport the deceased from the habanero Sword Cemetery.<\/p>\n
The political spirit of this killing is owed to the bloody nature of the crime and the impact it had on Cubans of good. Both on the island and in exile the date was conmemorized each year, as a symbol of the bestiality of the Spanish authorities. Students were accused, above all, of desecrating the tomb of journalist Gonzalo Casta\u00f1\u00f3n, a court jester and idol of the volunteers. Three scratches on the tomb, which the cemetery priest recognized as ancient and covered in mold, justified the alleged rape. The entire class of that course was imprisoned by the political governor, to be questioned by a martial court.<\/p>\n
After several military councils that gave in to pressure from the Volunteer Corps, eight students were sentenced to death. Several of them had not even been to the cemetery: their name was obtained by lot. One, much to the biggest scandal, was not in Havana on the day of the events.<\/p>\n
The whole city was silent and that is arguably the most shameful thing about November 27th. The university minutes don’t even mention the fact.<\/p>\n
Alejandro Gil, through the script of Am\u00edlcar Salatti, organized these events into two cross-frames. In one of the lines Ferm\u00edn Vald\u00e9s Dom\u00ednguez (an essential figure in Cuban history, to which at last came his cinematic time) obsessively pursues the reconstruction of the facts and the exact place where the students were buried. Fermin, a friend since Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed’s childhood, was one of the students imprisoned in November ’71. We see him sixteen years later, bent on writing a book (actually, it is the re-editing of his text on shooting, originally published in 1872, with new materials). Vald\u00e9s Dominguez’s dream is the vindication of his companions and the uprising of a monument that honors his memory and restores them to innocence.<\/p>\n
El libro de Ferm\u00edn recoge pasajes emotivos y terribles, e incluso contiene las notas que escribieron los muchachos antes de morir. Algunas de ellas son esenciales para elaborar la segunda trama, que indaga en la vida de los muchachos y en las causas que los arrojaron a los engranajes del juego pol\u00edtico que les cost\u00f3 la vida.
\nEl episodio amoroso del filme, por ejemplo, viene de la \u00faltima voluntad de Anacleto Berm\u00fadez: \u201cMis queridos padres y hermanos: hoy, que es el \u00faltimo momento de mi vida. Me despido de ustedes, y que se consuelen pronto. Les recomiendo en particular a mi Lola y que ella guarda mi sortija, y que la leontina que tiene mi hermano la entregue a Lola. Sin m\u00e1s, \u00e9chenme la bendici\u00f3n y no se olviden de mi recomendaci\u00f3n\u201d. Y m\u00e1s adelante escribe: \u201cLola: acu\u00e9rdate de m\u00ed\u201d.<\/p>\n
La narrativa del filme es \u00e1gil, h\u00e1bilmente urdida como la investigaci\u00f3n de un crimen que Ferm\u00edn resuelve en su totalidad casi dos d\u00e9cadas despu\u00e9s. Inocencia combina los recursos del cine hist\u00f3rico con los de las historias detectivescas, dosificando la intensidad dram\u00e1tica hasta la detonaci\u00f3n final, aun cuando ya se haya anunciado y previsto la tragedia.<\/p>\n
Un episodio pol\u00e9mico, que incluso historiadores como Le Roy toman por ap\u00f3crifo y fantasioso, es la defensa de los estudiantes, a punto de llegar al pared\u00f3n, por varios miembros de la sociedad abaku\u00e1 (fraternidad de origen africano con un alto sentido de la \u00e9tica y la justicia). El director del filme, que ya hab\u00eda producido un documental sobre el 27 de noviembre, aclar\u00f3 su fundamento en una rigurosa investigaci\u00f3n de los archivos habaneros. El tema y su ocultamiento por tantos a\u00f1os siguen siendo naturalmente pol\u00e9micos. \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 se guard\u00f3 silencio, tambi\u00e9n, sobre este hecho casi desconocido?<\/p>\n
La reconstrucci\u00f3n de la \u00e9poca es, en todo sentido, cuidadosa. No obstante, resultan francamente lamen-tables algunas actuaciones d\u00e9biles (a veces en actores de carrera notable) y el hecho inexplicable de que los personajes espa\u00f1oles hablen con evidente acento cubano.<\/p>\n
Se ha dicho que es una pel\u00edcula necesaria. Es verdad. Se le ha buscado una lectura contempor\u00e1nea, en alg\u00fan que otro parlamento afilado. La tiene, pero solo porque los acontecimientos que presenta hablan de los grandes temas humanos: la injusticia, la muerte, la verdad, el poder, el amor y el silencio.
\nNo creo que sea la intenci\u00f3n del filme provocar una lectura desmesuradamente puntual de la Cuba contempor\u00e1nea, y quien haya escuchado la presentaci\u00f3n del director en el Cine Camilo, de Santa Clara se percata de su devoci\u00f3n pura por el tema. No obstante, Inocencia puede y debe ser le\u00edda por el cubano de hoy, e inspirar la misma verg\u00fcenza que, me imagino, sintieron los habaneros al leer el libro de Vald\u00e9s Dom\u00ednguez, la verg\u00fcenza de dormir tranquilos y callados, cuando el mundo circundante se cae a pedazos.
\nQuiz\u00e1s fue esta la motivaci\u00f3n que le hizo merecer a Inocencia el premio SIGNIS en el Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, puesto que el filme \u201cpermite\u201d, seg\u00fan el jurado, \u201creflexionar al espectador sobre ese pasado que relata la obra, y el presente, donde el oportunismo, la intolerancia, la corrupci\u00f3n, el abuso de poder y la delaci\u00f3n siguen afectando nuestro entorno social\u201d.<\/p>\n
Apreciada en el conjunto de pel\u00edculas hist\u00f3ricas en la reciente filmograf\u00eda cubana, Inocencia se coloca junto a Mart\u00ed: el ojo el canario o Cuba libre, por citar dos ejemplos, en su empe\u00f1o de reinterpretar Cuba desde su pasado. Es una pel\u00edcula hecha por los j\u00f3venes y para ellos, que ofrece de nuevo una lecci\u00f3n que el cubano tiene que aprender, porque la olvida constantemente: la revisi\u00f3n continua, dolorosa y sincera de nuestra propia historia. \u2126<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
