Gaztelu and Carlos Jesus: the honest simplicity of poetry

Over the years, journalist Miguel Terry Valdespino claims that a poem such as “Late village” and a work as human and spiritual as that of Father Angel Gaztelu, “could not go unnoticed before the eyes and pen of the poet, narrator and critic baptized Carlos Jesús Cabrera Enríquez, who died at the young age of 54 and in full creative maturity”. Carlos, writer of extreme honesty, created, following the founding of Artemis as a province, the late people’s talk, the name of a poem of the same name of the priest and spiritual leader also of the renowned Grupo Orígenes, composed of figures such as Cintio Vitier, Fina García-Marruz, José Lezama Lima and Gastón Baquero, among others, who under his light (not in his shadow) , in the church of Nuestra Señora de la Merced and other grounds of Bauta, they broadened their spiritual vision not only with regard to religion and culture, but also in terms of the destiny of the Cuban nation.

Cubans, cinema and the year they’re leaving

Despite the pain from the losses caused by covid, 2020 was an opportunity for the young Catholic writer, Xavier Carbonell, to cultivate himself. Beyond his own experience, he considers that during this time of pandemic, joints and ordering? many Cubans have opted for rereadings of retired books, magazines and films. “Despite everything, we’re still willing to hit all the balls on the room, officially certified for the next five years,” he says.

Walking together

We share with the readers of Palabra Nueva this text by Jorge Fernández Era, who this time writes about the need that we all have to feel accompanied and accompany at the same time the family member, the friend, the neighbor door with door or the acquaintance of the corner. “That’s what it’s all about: we have to go with each other. There’s no other left.”

From the book and its prices, from the authors and utopias in the pandemic from various personal experiences

As for many, 2020 was a years agond for Daniel Céspedes Góngora. However, from him he was able to experience, as never before, being an author. His nonconformity in the face of the world situation felt from our country, motivated him to write with will: he prepared an anthology about María Zambrano (Maria Zambrano at the Universidad del Aire, 2020); he wrote a new prologue for the Cuban edition of The Golden Weather for the Nile. Another reading by José Lezama Lima, by Roberto Méndez and, by adventure, Alberto Garrandés, summoned him to write the words of cover of his recent volume Un owl perplejo (essays on cinema). Previously, this young writer, a regular collaborator of Palabra Nueva, won the Eliseo Diego Prize in the nonfiction category, which ensures that it is first published in Cuba.

Allocution January 31, 4nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

On the fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Cardinal Juan de la Caridad García, Archbishop of Havana, recalled the feast of St. John Bosco and inspired by his work said: “In the face of the difficulties presented to us by others to teach young people, let us become deaf and continue with them in the style of Don Bosco.” Jesus Christ is our model.

IV Sunday of Ordinary Time

Jesus is the Prophet of God, the Father’s envoy, the Holy One of God. The fascination that your person produces cannot be compared to that of any social or political leader of our time or of any era. His figure and message are based on the coherence of life he showed that led him to the final sacrifice on the Cross. When the exercise of power is exercised without principle and without conscience, every spiritual, moral or social authority is lost and falls into authoritarianism, which leads to the imposition of ideas, ignorance or elimination of the adversary, oppression and suppression of freedom. And this, done in a subtle or uninhibited way, leads to the same personal and social result: the destruction of the person and society. He has come into the world to build a new humanity. Jesus reveals God’s love for each of us. His authority is not an oppressive power but a balm that frees us, a new light that illuminates the dark stretches of our existence, a force that encourages us in our struggles, difficulties, trials and temptations.

Pandemic, culture and interiority

In the most recent printed issue of Palabra Nueva, the Catholic intellectual Dr. Roberto Méndez reviews the months lived in total lockdown during the year 2020 and identifies this time as a test of patience, sanity and humility. When 2021 advances amid great uncertainty, the poet and essayist recapitulates past life and takes advantage of being, like St Augustine, a millimeter closer in the search for transcendence.

Reason for hope for the Cuban Church

One event that marked the recent celebrations in the Archdiocese of Havana was the priestly ordination of two permanent deacons, an unusual fact in the history of the Cuban Church. After more than forty years of marriage, and the departure to the father’s house of his loving wives, the present priests Luis Entrialgo Pintado and Maximus Jenes Isasi asked to serve God and the Cuban people through the priesthood in the last years of their lives.
