Padre Juan Manuel Galaviz

El padre Juan Manuel Galaviz ha muerto. Encontró el descanso eterno en esta Cuba que lo acogió cuando la Sociedad San Pablo, comunidad religiosa a la que pertenecía, quiso refundar casa en la Isla, luego de partir de ella pocos años después del triunfo de la revolución de 1959. Llegó en diciembre de 2012 junto a otros dos hermanos consagrados y, con el apoyo del entonces arzobispo de La Habana, cardenal Jaime Ortega, emprendieron las gestiones correspondientes para reiniciar la misión paulina en la arquidiócesis.


Prolijo en el decir, era fácil advertir sabiduría y prudencia en sus palabras, especialmente para referirse a la joven obra paulina de La Habana. Mexicano, licenciado en Lingüística y Literatura española y autor de numerosos artículos y libros, el padre Galaviz fue dos veces superior provincial de los paulinos de México y consejero general de la congregación durante doce años. Sin dudas, su experiencia le sirvió para protagonizar la reapertura de la misión en la arquidiócesis habanera y, poco después, para asumir en la revista Palabra Nueva una sección mensual sobre la vida de los santos.


Lo hizo con el esmero de quien deseaba despojar de todo halo milagrero la existencia de hombres y mujeres, cuya mayor virtud estuvo en abandonarse en las manos de Dios. Como santos de carne y hueso, fue presentando lo mismo a un obispo, a un sacerdote, a un religioso que a un niño, una adolescente o un ama de casa. El ingenio de su escritura descansó en convidarnos a vivir la santidad en la medida que nos descubría a personas santas perfectamente imitables.


Poco tiempo vivió el padre Juan –así le llamábamos– entre los cubanos, pero le resultó suficiente para sentirse uno más de nosotros y decir, en reiteradas ocasiones, que quería morir en Cuba. Un deseo que Dios le concedió pocos meses antes de celebrar su cumpleaños setenta y ocho. Había nacido en Aguascalientes, México, el 9 de mayo de 1941. Con solo once años ingresó en la comunidad de Mixcoac, barrio de la Ciudad de México y primera casa paulina en ese país. Hizo el noviciado en la comunidad de Taxqueña y al concluirlo emitió sus primeros votos en febrero de 1960. Un año después cursó en Roma, en el Colegio Internacional Paulino, los estudios teológicos. El 8 de septiembre de 1964 se consagró de manera perpetua a la vida religiosa y el 30 de junio de 1965 recibió la ordenación sacerdotal.


Hombre de gran inquietud intelectual, lector ávido, desde muy joven asumió la enseñanza en diversas áreas académicas. Por sus cualidades como escritor, fue director de la revista Familia Cristiana, en su edición mexicana. Durante su gestión, la publicación alcanzó un elevado nivel y una gran difusión. A esa energía juvenil que imprimía al trabajo, sumó la avidez por el conocimiento. Fue entonces que decidió cursar estudios de Literatura en la Universidad Iberoamericana y emprendió diversas iniciativas apostólicas, entre ellas la puesta en marcha del Instituto Paulino de Comunicación, hoy Instituto de Comunicación y Filosofía.


A partir de 1980 comenzó a desempeñarse como superior local de varias comunidades y como provincial de la región. Fue también delegado para los Institutos agregados y los Cooperadores paulinos y más tarde coordinador de la Comisión preparatoria del VII Capítulo general de la Sociedad, donde fue elegido consejero general y reconfirmado en ese cargo en el capítulo siguiente.


Desde diciembre de 2010 se dedicó en cuerpo y alma a la reapertura de la comunidad de Cuba, idea que logró concretar el 8 de diciembre de 2012. Pasados cinco años, el 4 de abril de 2018, la Iglesia habanera toda compartía con el padre Galaviz y otros hermanos paulinos, la alegría de inaugurar en la arquidiócesis el Centro de Evangelización San Pablo. Era su gran sueño, y lo vio realizado.


El pasado 11 de enero, en una misa de cuerpo presente celebrada en la parroquia San Juan Bosco, Cuba y su Iglesia pudieron despedir al querido padre Juan, como fue llamado por los cubanos desde que puso un pie en esta tierra. Nos quiso y lo quisimos mucho. Ω

En los números correspondientes a los meses de enero y febrero continuaremos publicando la sección “Santos de hoy y de siempre”, bajo la firma del padre Juan Manuel Galaviz, quien con anticipación había entregado los artículos a la redacción de la revista.

  24. Me duele de sobremanera de pronto escribir unas líneas a quien hace 30 años conocí, siendo un joven arquitecto recién egresado de la universidad. Me resulta muy difícil tratar de describir quien era el padre Juan Manuel Galaviz herrera y lo que significó en mi vida. Habiendo tenido la oportunidad de construir la librería San Pablo(madero) en GDL. Y remodelado la de calle(independencia). Me tocaron momentos muy difíciles después y nunca más lo volví a ver. Ahora que a transcurrido el tiempo Y quise saber de el me duele en EL Alma, su partida. Fueron varios años en que compartí con el y con otros sacerdotes y monjas (paulinas y pías discípulas d sc). Me ayudaron y aprendí muchas cosas de él. Solo me resta agradecer por la oportunidad de habernos encontrado en esta vida.
