Nos convoca hoy aquí la feliz ocasión de hacer entrega al cardenal Jaime Ortega Alamino –nuestro querido cardenal Jaime–, de la distinción “Monseñor Carlos Manuel de Céspedes” que le ha otorgado la Comisión de Cultura de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Cuba. Premio y premiado contribuyen a que esta sencilla ceremonia de hoy esté muy lejos de ser uno de esos sosos actos de reconocimiento que nuestros medios presentan con agotadora reiteración. El premio, porque si bien es un modesto signo honorífico, tiene el brillo especial que le transmite el nombre querido e ilustre del recordado sacerdote, de estirpe patriótica y de profundo amor a Cuba, Monseñor Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. El premiado, porque el cardenal Jaime Ortega, a fuerza de entregarse sin reservas a su servicio como pastor, ha dejado una huella luminosa e inspiradora, como pocas, en nuestra historia como Iglesia y como país.
Gracias a su temprana formación artística, el Cardenal vio con claridad, ya desde sus primeros empeños apostólicos en la Acción Católica y después en su época de párroco en su nativa Matanzas, el poder del arte –la música, la poesía, el teatro– como alimento del espíritu y camino hacia Dios. Ya se tratase del coro parroquial o de un grupo teatral de jóvenes, el camino de la Belleza –la tan apreciada via pulchritudinis– se presentaba como valioso recurso de mejoramiento humano y crecimiento espiritual, senda hacia el definitivo encuentro con el Bien y la Verdad.
Durante todo su ministerio, el Cardenal ha manifestado continuamente ese cuidado de los detalles que nace de su profunda apreciación de la belleza, ya sea en los aspectos arquitectónicos de las numerosas restauraciones de templos que ha logrado realizar en la Arquidiócesis, entre las que se destaca especialmente la de ese ícono de la ciudad que es la majestuosa Catedral de La Habana, incluidas sus imágenes, cuadros y frescos, o en su minuciosa atención a la liturgia. En este aspecto ha ocupado un lugar preferente la música, tanto en la selección de los cantos como en la calidad de las interpretaciones instrumentales y corales.
Me consta cuán cercano a su corazón ha sido el proyecto del Centro Cultural Padre Félix Varela, donde nos encontramos, proyecto que él mismo concibió e hizo realidad, en su empeño por dar continuidad a la obra de formación del laicado cubano que emprendió el Padre Varela en el colegio Seminario de San Carlos. Hay que oírlo describir cuán vívidamente se siente la presencia entre estos muros venerables del espíritu del Padre Varela, que nos anima a continuar su ejemplar labor formadora.
¡Cuánto hizo el Cardenal, en primer lugar, por la construcción de la nueva sede del Seminario, que hizo posible que esta, su histórica sede, se destinara al Centro Cultural! Cuánto ha hecho después en pro de la obtención de apoyos para la restauración del edificio; para la aprobación, estructuración y funcionamiento del Instituto de Estudios Eclesiásticos Padre Félix Varela, que ya ha cumplido seis años; para la construcción de la biblioteca del Centro y la obtención de valiosos fondos para ella, incluida la donación de su biblioteca personal; para el establecimiento y funcionamiento de la Cátedra de Música Sacra, con las ya imprescindibles Semanas de Música Sacra en las que participan estudiantes de todas las escuelas de música de La Habana, y su participación en empeños conjuntos con otras entidades de la cultura, como la restauración de los grandes órganos de las iglesias de La Habana, entre otros proyectos.
Su labor en pro del diálogo Iglesia-cultura se ha extendido a las disciplinas científicas, tanto a las ciencias exactas y naturales –recordemos, entre otros eventos memorables, aquel homenaje de los meteorólogos cubanos al P. Benito Viñes y al Observatorio del Colegio de Belén–, como de la Bioética, con la creación del Centro de Bioética Juan Pablo II, que se ha labrado, a través de la vía que su Director describe como capilaridad, una ampliamente reconocida posición de liderazgo en ese campo en el país.
El Cardenal siempre ha tenido claro que es así, capilarmente, como la Iglesia puede lograr «alcanzar y transformar con la fuerza del Evangelio los criterios de juicio, los valores determinantes, los puntos de interés, las líneas de pensamiento, las fuentes inspiradoras y los modelos de vida de la humanidad, que están en contraste con la palabra de Dios y con el designio de salvación… …lo que importa es evangelizar… de manera vital, en profundidad y hasta las mismas raíces, la cultura y las culturas del hombre » (San Pablo VI, Evangelii nuntiandi, 19-20).
Por todo ello, el Cardenal disfruta cada concierto y recital que celebramos, cada exposición de artes plásticas que presentamos, cada número de nuestras revistas que se publica, cada debate que organizamos sobre algún tema de actualidad, cada película que exhibimos… Es un disfrute que nace sobre todo de su convicción de que estamos sirviendo a la sociedad cubana, haciendo presente a la Iglesia en la vida de la sociedad, propiciando ese intenso intercambio con el que el Centro, al mismo tiempo que actúa en la sociedad, se perfecciona y se pone al día con lo que recibe de ella, en un proceso de enriquecimiento mutuo continuamente ascendente.
No podría dejar de mencionar su labor constante, no bien recibida siempre ni por todos, en pro de la imprescindible reconciliación entre cubanos. Ha sufrido con paciencia los rechazos, porque «este es el dar la vida por las ovejas… porque no hay resurrección sin cruz, y yo he aceptado que con eso tengo que cargar, y tenemos que cargar para llevar adelante esa reconciliación entre cubanos». El Cardenal nunca ha cejado ni cejará en ese empeño.
Amor a Cristo y a su Iglesia, amor a la Patria, espíritu de diálogo, son notas distintivas de la vida y el ministerio de nuestro Cardenal. Con ellas nos inspira y nos anima a continuar.
