“A deacon is the servant of Our Lady, of life, of pregnant women, of crucified love, of the poor, sick, sinners, of the Church, of the feast of heaven enjoyed here on earth,” Cardinal Juan García said in his homily.

Lázaro Cánovas, graduated as an engineer from the Polytechnic Higher Institute (CUJAE) and then a professor at the University of Computer Science (UCI), left everything to dedicate his life to priestly vocation.

Referring to this Saturday’s ceremony, the new deacon confessed to being saddened. “For nine years now, he said, I dreamed of this different day, but you, Lord, never cease to amaze me with your divine pedagogy, you teach me every day that only one thing remains, only one thing is forever: only God, only you.”

However, the physical absence of their mother and father because of the current epidemiological situation did not prevent them from being present all the time through a video called by the WhatsApp messaging app, where they witnessed the ceremony from their residence on Youth Island.

Amid the regrowth of coronavirus cases in the capital, this was the second diaconal ordination ceremony held by the Haban archdiocese in August. The next one will take place next Friday 28, in the parish of San Nicolás de Bari.
