Es probable que 2018 haya sido un año memorable para los que siguen la ya extensa filmografía de Steven Spielberg, pues en apenas poco tiempo los espectadores han tenido la oportunidad de vibrar con ese otro costado de su carrera –muchas veces vilipendiado– pero que demuestra, en fin, un cine comercial tan apetecible y digno como sus otros títulos de un calibre artístico de mayor peso. Ready Player One –Comienza el juego, en su traducción al español– ya estrenada, había sido pospuesta por Spielberg para configurar con The Post: los oscuros secretos del Pentágono un cine “de urgencia”, sin embargo, la creatividad del genio de Hollywood no desanimó a quienes aguardaron apenas unos meses para degustar del nuevo blockbuster posapocalíptico, con su sobredosis de emoción y aventura.
Ready Player One es la adaptación de la novela homónima de Ernest Cline publicada en 2009 y que ha sido también un bestseller entre los gamers de diversas latitudes. En este libro, son ellos los protagonistas de una mega-aventura que los lleva a transitar por el infinito mundo virtual Oasis, mientras buscan una serie de huevos de pascua escondidos entre innumerables acertijos y referencias a la cultura popular de los años ochenta y noventa. El propio Cline y Zak Penn (X-Men: la decisión final) serían los encargados de aderezar este plato fuerte con la evidente asesoría de Spielberg que le añade los inevitables cameos a las películas más emblemáticas de la etapa, algunas de él mismo.
En general, Spielberg permanece fiel al espíritu aventurero de esta obra en tanto desanda caminos ya transitados en su filmografía –Encuentros en la tercera fase (1977), la clásica Indiana Jones y los cazadores del arca perdida (1981), E.T., el extraterrestre (1982), El imperio del sol (1987), Parque Jurásico (1993), Inteligencia artificial (2001), Minority Report (2002), La guerra de los mundos (2005), Indiana Jones y el reino de la calavera de cristal (2008) o Las aventuras de Tintín: El secreto del unicornio (2011)– para discutir problemáticas que atañen a las novedades tecnológicas, sus bondades y efectos nocivos a escala global. La era milenial se vislumbra como un universo distópico donde cada quien prefiere evadir una realidad corroída y visiblemente estratificada que sume a las clases sociales desfavorecidas en la más precaria marginalidad. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) el protagonista, es el típico personaje que llevará adelante un proceso de metamorfosis en su ascensión heroica en una narrativa plagada de las más inimaginables aventuras que violentan los límites entre realidad y ficción. Una vez más el programa narrativo de este filme valida la eficacia del didactismo ideológico del mito del héroe, en el cual el núcleo central tiene como soporte la clásica batalla entre el Bien y el Mal, y la particularidad de un mensaje estético que apuesta sus lecciones en la amistad, la unidad y la inteligencia como armas de lucha contra un poder despótico que signa y amenaza el destino del mundo.
Justo al final de la película, Halliday (Mark Rylance), el personaje que ideó Oasis, mientras procura el huevo de pascuas que coronará a Wade como ganador de la carrera, le dice desde una original perspectiva filosófica con la cual se pretende resumir toda la ideología de la película: “[…] a pesar de lo aterradora y dolorosa que sea la realidad también es el único lugar donde se puede comer decentemente”. Acto seguido coloca el huevo virtual en manos de Wade que gana una apariencia real a los ojos de todos en el mundo físico. Wade comprende de este modo el enigma del juego, que, en síntesis, pretende una metáfora, desde la distopía futurista del 2049, de nuestro presente histórico. Un sesgo baudrillardiano palpita en la ideología de esta película en su aparente banalidad, que insta a reflexionar en torno a la incapacidad de los actores sociales de distinguir entre realidad y fantasía, motivados por el excesivo consumismo en sociedades tecnológicamente avanzadas; cuán vulnerables resultan, también, la naturaleza y la conciencia humanas cuando es imposible encontrar alternativas de resistencia al dictum de la obsolescencia programada, mientras quedan atrapadas bajo el influjo nocivo de la alienación y la dependencia a las nuevas tecnologías.
¿Qué nos trae, además, de sobresaliente y admirable esta nueva propuesta? La manera en que la intención autoral decide permanecer fiel, al menos en espíritu, al original narrativo, para relegar todo el protagonismo al universo virtual al que hace referencia. El despliegue tecnológico de este filme supera con creces el dinamismo de otros títulos recientes –Mad Max: furia en el camino, George Miller, 2015–, es probable que tanto genio creativo obtenga sus recompensas en la alfombra roja. Al convertir esta película en un sinfín de referencias a obras audiovisuales emblemáticas de la historia del cine y a elementos de la cultura popular de los ochenta y noventa, la aventura del viaje se convierte en una experiencia doble –para los personajes y el espectador– en un universo distópico en el que el virtuosismo de las CGI consigue desprender el vértigo de la emoción.
Si en la novela de Cline sus poco más de cuatrocientas páginas exploran cada resquicio de la cultura popular y de los videojuegos clásicos que hicieron historia en su momento, en RPO el recurso del pastiche ensancha las posibilidades de expresión de una narrativa lúdicra que interpela la memoria histórica y hace del espectador un participante activo de este universo virtual sin obstaculizar en lo más mínimo los motivos dinámicos fundamentales que dan vida al relato. Se dice que el propio Spielberg declaró que se necesita al menos ver seis veces esta película para identificar cada detalle insertado, pero basta una primera vez para revivir pasajes memorables de títulos emblemáticos como El resplandor, de Kubrick, vibrar con las referencias a los Goonies y A-ha, o claramente acompañar la pasarela de personajes ya clásicos como Kong, los dinosaurios de Jurassic Park, He-man, las Tortugas Ninjas, los Battletoads, Alien y un sinfín de avatares que no escapan a la furia de Chucky, el muñeco asesino de Don Mancini.
Es este el más desmesurado y extraordinario trabajo de posproducción en efectos especiales que la Industrial Light & Magic ha realizado en los últimos años, con el cual Spielberg no solo se supera a sí mismo –Jurassic Park, Minority Report– sino también nos lega un nuevo título que revoluciona la historia del cine en este rubro. Ready Player One consigue, además, la extraordinaria sensación de hacernos olvidar que asistimos a imágenes creadas por computadora, haciendo honor al mensaje estético de su película. ¿Qué tiene en contra, no obstante, su desmesura? Tal vez el reproche al desborde de una aventura virtual que, por momentos, resiente la hondura psicológica de los protagónicos reales, con avatares más atractivos que sus físicos y gestualidades. Tye Sheridan tiene la frescura que nos trae la novedad de un rostro poco conocido y aunque cautiva la inocencia de su amor por Atermis (Olivia Cooke) –el romanticismo en la pose final del beso es un guiño intencional a esos filmes silentes perdidos en la memoria del tiempo–, parece obnubilado por su versión avatar en poco más de dos horas de puro entretenimiento. Eso también, lamentablemente, sucede con el resto de los personajes secundarios de los cuales Aech/Helen (Lena Waithe) tiene el mérito de interesarnos por su desenfado, y la estafa con su alter-ego virtual nos hace pasar gato por liebre.
Este filme concede, además, excesivo metraje a una aventura que solo logra un mayor interés en los segmentos iniciales e intermedios; las emociones como que sufren la afección de quien llega sin aliento a la meta, luego de haber corrido una maratón en carrera desenfrenada. Mark Rylance, en su maridaje con Spielberg desde títulos pasados –Puente de los espías, The BFG (2016)–, es con seguridad lo mejor en este filme en cuanto a diseño de personajes, un remedo autobiográfico con el cual su realizador vuelve a lanzar atrevidas (necesarias) advertencias, pero nos habla también de una pasión que hace de esta historia una alegoría de su mundo interior. Es esto último, a mi juicio, lo más relevante de la película: el modo en que nos muestra el desnudo virtual de un realizador que sigue estando en lo más alto de la filmografía mundial de ahora mismo. Ante eso solo es posible una genuflexión, concederle una licencia de vista gorda a cualquier extravío y dejar que ese río revuelto de realidad y fantasía nos arrastre y haga lo suyo.
A setenta años intensos de una carrera coronada por el éxito, Spielberg sigue demostrando su buena forma en cada entrega para darnos lecciones cautivantes de buen cine. Ω
