On the morning of this 27 July, Archbishop Jean Francois Simonart, current secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Cuba, presided over the mass of the present body of Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino.
The representative of the Holy See emphasized the privilege of the Cuban prelated to receive three Pontiffs as archbishop and cardinal: St. John Paul II in 1998, Benedict XVI in 2012 and, more recently, in 2015, Pope Francis.
In his homily he read the message signed by cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, addressed to the current Archbishop of San Cristobal de Havana, Msgr. Juan de la Caridad García Rodríguez. Its content expresses Pope Francis’ condolences for the death of Archbishop Emeritus, Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega Alamino, which took place on Friday, July 26 at the age of 82 after a long battle with cancer.
