With a mass of vigil in the Cathedral of Havana presided over by the Archbishop, S.E.R. Cardinal Juan de la Caridad García Rodríguez, the celebrations began from the night of this Sunday, November 15th, by the day of San Cristobal, patron saint of the Archdiocese and for the 501st anniversary of the founding of the capital of all Cubans and Cubans.
In his homily the Cardinal invited the faithful to imitate the heroic virtues of the patron saint and said: “St. Kitts knew Christ through the witness of the Church, through the teaching of the Church, through the catechism of the Church and realized that with Christ he could overcome his evils, his personal sins, the sins of the Church, and the sins of the people.”
“St. Kitts lived in the service of others, and with the strength and stature god had given him, he lent himself to cross the river on his shoulders to those who could not do so. One day he realized that on his shoulders was Christ,” he added.
At the end of the Mass, the Archbishop suggested that on Monday mothers, children, grandparents and marriages should be in front of the image of St. Kitts and ask for the blessing for their families: “St. Kitts protects us, accompanies us and wants to lead us to the happiness of our lives and in eternity.”
On the other hand, Father Yosvani Carvajal Sureda, parish priest of the Cathedral, congratulated the Habaneros and residents of the city on the 501st anniversary of the capital. On the schedule of the Masses this Monday 16 November in the Cathedral, he explained that the church will open its doors at 6 a.m. to perform the traditional “Mass of the Mute”, in which the faithful remain silent throughout the celebration. The other Eucharists will be in the following order: 10:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and the last will be done at 6 p.m. The Most Holy will also be exhibited at 3 p.m.
This is the first time in many years that the traditional procession will not take place through the streets of the historic center of the city with the image of San Cristobal because of the epidemiological situation that crosses the country because of COVID 19.
