Community of Sant’Egidio: fifty years in Cuba

Comunidad de Sant´Egidio: cincuenta años en Cuba

On Saturday, April 21, the Sant’Egidio Community celebrated the 50th anniversary of its presence in Cuba. At a mass of thanksgiving presided over by the Archbishop of Havana, Archbishop Juan de la Caridad García, the members of this great project of service and help to those most in need, as well as their benefactors, prayed in gratitude for therefore well realized in these years and for the challenges that arise on our island.

Carlos Samper, deputy director of the Office for Religious Affairs of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and members of the diplomatic corps accredited on the island, personalities of Cuban culture and society, also present at the celebration.

In this fifty years the Sant’Eegidio Community has developed humanitarian aid projects for the elderly and underdogs, fostered reception spaces for young people and enhanced community work from a Christian perspective.
