Master Walfredo Piñera
If there was consensus among the heterogeneous group of filmmakers that made up the International Catholic Film Office (OCIC, now part of Signis) in the mid-1990s, it was to call Walfredo Piñera a teacher. He came from walking long and tortuous paths, always loyal to his compass: he had long been the dean of film criticism in Cuba, with unalterable Christian faith. Be this text, a well-deserved tribute to him and his work, ninety years after his birth.

We don’t repeat missions
The film The Old Guard (2020) seems, in its early days, a policeman and suddenly reveals itself as what it really is: a superhero adventure. Although sailing off its territory, director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, Behind the Lights…), comes out of this start which, it seems, will have continuity. With the screenplay by Greg Rucka, the film is based on the comic of the same name, whose authors are Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández. Among others, it stars Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Marwan Kenzari.

The Covid-19 crisis has tested not only the health systems of the affected countries, but also the different societies and states in the face of the two major problems posed: the health and functioning of the economy. Prioritizing the second over the former has deepened the crisis in some nations. In the case of Cuba, it has been favored by an effective health system articulated with the decisions of the government and the state, which have been clear that health is the most important thing, even if the economy is battered and suffers the onslating of border closures with its consequences for the entry of tourists, which is one of the few columns of that economy. On these and other notes goes this approach to the year of the Covid.

A life of faith
It has the name of a Garciamarchyan character, Zoe de los Dolores Larrea Dihigo, but in 1942 he did not come into the world in any town in Colombia or in any of Greece, where his name means Vida; but in one named Vereda Nueva, in Havana, currently part of the territory of Artemis. A woman of church throughout her life, Zoe confessed to the New Word that the Catholic faith owes her complete formation, as a woman, teacher, Cuban and Christian. “The indissoluble whole that makes me,” he says.
