With a call to the Christian community to develop the ministry of Charity and witness to the Love of God, Caritas Cuba convenes its national collection, which this time bears the motto “Your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (Mt 6:1).
The initiative extends for the second consecutive year for four months (June to September), with the aim of awakening sensitivity to the multiple social problems that cause marginality.
“We want to call for reflection on the growing trend in the world and in our society towards individualism, and on the need to build from the depths of the person a civilization of love,” explains Maritza Sánchez Abillud, director of the Catholic institution.
Raffles, exposales and other activities serve to educate and raise funds in the Christian communities of the eleven dioceses of the country. On this occasion, resources will be allocated to different programmes, depending on the particularities and vulnerable groups of each territory.
According to Maritza, “the spirituality that animates us is illuminated, in addition to the Gospel, by Pope Francis’ encyclical letter Laudato Si’, which invites us to build a culture of shared life and respect for what surrounds us”.
The director appreciated the generosity shown each year by Cubans, even though the economic situation of the majority is not favorable. In 2018 more than four hundred communities and thirteen groups of various projects – such as CubaEmprende – participated in the collection. The collective effort of these actors managed to gather about 295,000 pesos in national currency, dedicated to the different services of the Elderly Program.
“I highly value the efforts of diocesan Caritas, especially volunteering and collaborators from parishes and communities. The support of our pastors, bishops and priests, with their letters and preachings, were fundamental in this management not only material, but also – not least – for educational purposes,” he considered.
Caritas Cuba has been collecting for more than two decades. Although this is national in nature, those who do not reside in the country can also send their aids through the website of the organization Friends of Cáritas Cuba: http://www.friendsofcaritascubana.org/Donate.
