El sueño de Salomón
Antes de subir al trono de David, Salomón tuvo que aniquilar a su hermano mayor. Comenzó, pues, su reinado envuelto en la zozobra y preguntándose si sería capaz de gobernar como su padre. Una noche soñó que estaba en oración y que le pedía al Altísimo, no riquezas ni poder, sino sabiduría para regir a su pueblo. Dios le dio esta respuesta: “Por haber pedido eso y no una vida larga, ni riquezas, ni la vida de tus enemigos, sino inteligencia para gobernar con acierto, te daré lo que has pedido: una mente sabia y prudente, como no la hubo antes ni la habrá después de ti, y te daré también lo que no has pedido: riquezas y fama mayores que las de rey alguno…” (1Re 2, 11-14).
El capítulo cinco del primer Libro de los Reyes describe el cumplimiento de tales promesas: la riqueza de Salomón llegó a ser incalculable, y su sabiduría trascendió las fronteras de su reino. A él se atribuye el fomento de las ciencias y de las artes en su pueblo, y el haber impulsado las recopilaciones de la sabiduría popular que contienen los refranes, los proverbios, los enigmas y las sentencias. Una de esas “píldoras de sabiduría” es esta plegaria: “No me des riqueza ni pobreza, concédeme solo el pan necesario; no sea que, muy lleno, reniegue de ti, diciendo: ‘¿Quién es el Señor?’. Y que tampoco suceda que, por la mucha necesidad, yo robe y ofenda el Nombre de mi Dios” (Prov 30, 8-9).
El dinero es un medio, no un fin
Desde la más remota antigüedad, los hombres abandonaron la primitiva práctica del trueque o intercambio de bienes (por ejemplo: yo te doy tres puñados de trigo y tú me das una calabaza), para valerse de ruedas de metal a las que se asignaba un valor. Surgieron así las monedas. Más tarde se inventó el papel moneda (o sea los billetes), con un valor todavía más convencional, pero respaldado por la tesorería del propio país. El poder económico de las naciones se refleja en el valor del dinero que maneja su gente. Con el desarrollo financiero en el mundo, los valores económicos ya no se limitan a los billetes: hoy se manejan acciones, operaciones de bolsa, asignación de precios a productos de gran consumo, monopolios, tratados condicionantes para los pueblos más débiles, etc. Tales políticas fingen ignorar que el dinero debe ser un medio justo para el legítimo progreso y no un fin. Eso da lugar a una carrera desaforada para obtener las máximas ganancias. La riqueza se convierte en un objetivo absoluto, y para obtenerla se falsea la ética, se pisotea la justicia y se emplean recursos detestables como el abuso, el acaparamiento, el engaño y aun el crimen. En una de sus reflexiones del 2016, el Papa Francisco hizo una pública denuncia de los idólatras del dinero, los cuales, con tal de incrementar sus capitales, provocan guerras para vender armas, hacen circular basura en los mercados, promueven el consumismo y practican la trata de personas.
El afán de riquezas –dinero– no se advierte únicamente en corporaciones o países ambiciosos. Es una aspiración malsana que se da en muchos individuos que no ven el dinero como un medio para el justo bienestar personal y de su familia, y lo toman como la razón de ser de la propia existencia. Esos individuos viven para tener y anhelan tener siempre más. Y sucede que caen en la categoría de los derrochadores o se vuelven avaros; son los dos extremos en que puede verse una persona codiciosa. La peor condición es la de los avaros, pues ni siquiera disfrutan lo mucho que tienen; se la pasan contando lo acumulado y viven siempre con el temor de que los roben. Bien aconseja Jesucristo: “No junten tesoros y reservas aquí en la tierra, donde la polilla y el óxido hacen estragos, y donde los ladrones perforan la pared y roban. Junten tesoros y reservas en el Cielo, donde no hay polilla ni óxido que hagan estragos, y donde no hay ladrones que rompan el muro y roben” (Mt 6, 19-20).
La codicia ha sido reprobada en todas las culturas; al codicioso lo castiga su propia ambición.
Esto nos cuenta la mitología griega: Midas, rey de Frigia, obtuvo del dios Dionisos el poder de transformar en oro todo lo que tocara. Al principio, Midas andaba loco de contento tocando cuanta cosa deseaba que se volviera de oro; pero llegó el momento en que tuvo hambre y no podía saciarla, porque cualquier alimento o fruta que tocara se transformaba en oro. Desesperado, rogó a Dionisos que le retirara ese poder tan funesto.
Las dos caras del dinero
El dinero permite satisfacer las necesidades vitales, pero puede también, por exceso o por mala tendencia del sujeto, generar falsas necesidades y dar lugar al consumismo y al despilfarro.
La falta de dinero, por otra parte, es motivo de angustia y puede inducir al robo o al envilecimiento moral con tal de aumentar los propios ingresos.
El dinero no es en sí mismo ni bueno ni malo. Todo depende del modo como se adquiera y del uso que se le dé.
Saberlo ganar, saberlo gastar, saberlo dar
Puesto que el dinero es un medio imprescindible para una vida personal y familiar digna, importa mucho saberlo ganar. Esto requiere trabajo, disciplina, sacrificio. Es mal camino pensar en “dinero fácil”, en “riqueza rápida”, en “bienestar sin esfuerzo”. Ganarse el pan con el sudor de la propia frente dignifica y da seguridad.
Es triste cuando alguien desea conseguir un trabajo digno y no lo encuentra. En tal caso –no siempre solucionable, lamentablemente– vale mucho la humildad y la creatividad: ser capaz de aceptar un trabajo honrado, aunque sea humilde, y poner en el acto la propia creatividad para buscar alternativas, maneras ingeniosas de tener una mejor fuente de ingresos.
También para gastar el propio dinero hacen falta una correcta orientación y buenos hábitos, como el de hacerse un presupuesto mensual o semanal, prever con tiempo gastos que van a presentarse, renunciar de antemano a lo que está por encima del propio presupuesto, etc.
Es casi una ley de la vida el pasar primero por una etapa en que se depende totalmente de los demás, e ir adquiriendo poco a poco la autosuficiencia de quien provee a los propios gastos, para llegar finalmente a la plenitud de la vida con la capacidad de sostenerse y de contribuir al bienestar de otros.
Quien es constante en el trabajo, ordenado en su economía, previsor en cuanto a gastos futuros, por lo general es persona generosa, capaz de dar alguna ayuda a quien más la necesita. Ω
