Act of the XXI New Word Journalism Contest

On the fifteenth day of June 2017, the jury of the New Word Competition met at the Padre Félix Varela Cultural Center in Havana, in its twenty-first edition, composed on this occasion by the Pbro. Elixander Torres Pérez (President), Mr. Daniel Céspedes Góngora, member of the Editorial Board of the magazine, Ms. Iyaimi Palomares Mederos, graduated in Social Communication, Mr. Iván Batista Cadalzo, graphic designer, and Mr. Mario Vizcaíno Serrat, journalist and contributor of the magazine, who unanimously agreed to award the following awards and mentions:

In Chronicle: Award for “A Traveler, a City, a Valley and a Hermitage” by Anabel Candelario Carmona, a text of agile reading, well adjusted to its category, with a direct and simple language. At the same time, he gives mention to “A Muambise Church and three girls to Mass on Sundays…”, by María del Carmen Ruisánchez, for the valuables of her history, the presentation of the life of simple faith of our people and the exhibition of her personal and family experience.

In article: Award to “Highlight virtue” of Julio Jesús Cubría Peregrino, for publicizeing the work of surrender of the religious congregation of the Casterates of Mary, ministers of the sick, with a friendly language, also adjusted to the gender in question. It gives mention to “New pastoral theological option or missionary mediating action of the Church” by Elio Vicente Valerino Santiesteba, for presenting the option of dialogue as a fundamental path in the missionary dynamics of the Church.

In Interview: Award for “The Sacred of Sport” by Jorge Cristóbal Ríos Anaya, for the originality of the subject and the linkage it makes between religion, culture and society. It gives mention to Mariluz Samper Zamora’s “The Sowing of God” for revealing the interesting and fruitful life of a Christian and Catholic woman dedicated to the development of film culture in Cuba.

In Report: The jury considered not awarding an award in this genre, however, it gives mention to Yandry Fernández Perdomo’s “The Sweet Hope of the Country”, for certainly addressing the participation of young Catholics in today’s Cuban society.

In Photography: Award to “El Camino a la paz” by Marta Pérez Díaz, by the force that transmits the image, achieved through its composition, and by its conciliatory message.

1st. Mention of “S/T” by Eglys Bouza Rodríguez, for reflecting the relationship between tradition and modernity, as well as for reflecting the human desire to appropriate the beautiful and the sacred.

2nd. Mention of “S/T” by Indiara Rivero Reyes, for the visual impact of the image, for its quality and for reflecting one of the facets of Cuban popular religiosity.

The jury and the Editorial Council of The New Word magazine would like to thank all those who submitted their work to this contest, while inviting them to participate in future editions.

For the record, this Act is signed in Havana, fifteen days after June 2017.
