The testimony of Lucia do Santos

The film “Fatima” is not only responsible for showing the beginnings of worship of our Lady of Fatima, but the transnationality of its events and messages on behalf of Portugal and the world. The film alternates between Lucia’s present and the researcher, and the origins of worship in the second decade of the 20th century. Unsurprisingly, curiosity about the capital fact and dramatic force of the story lie in that past, where the conflict between mistrust and other prejudices lies and belief and subsequent approval. However, as the facts were the case, the old Lucia confesses very resolutely to those who ask so much: “Faith begins within the limits of understanding”.

COVID Notes of the Year (14)

For Mon. Juan de Dios Hernández Ruíz, bishop of Pinar del Río, the virus that appeared in China a few months ago caused life to take on another rhythm. In tune with the popular saying that says, “If you want to see God laugh, show him your plans,” the Church in Vueltabajo had to adapt her life to a time of pandemic. However, as it quotes from a recently published book, peace in the midst of a pandemic is found only in Jesus. “The question for all of us, he says, is this: are we going to trust Him?”

Mother of Cuba, Mother of All

While September brings for believers, and for Cubans proud of their traditions, the celebrations associated with the Virgin of Charity of Copper, politics pokes out its hairy ear. Again, ideological stances, and more than these, hatred and the desire to separate and prevail, seek to meddle and soil issues where such attitudes and feelings should not be accommodated. How can some pretend that a sacred symbol, like that Mother of all, serves to sustain or to hate and oppose a political system? Charity, without exclusions, is everyone’s. No side has the right to politicize a celebration that rightly calls for harmony, peace, unity and not hatred. There are too many misfortunes right now, just because of the policies, hatreds and selfishness on the sides of the world, so that also the premises of peace and union are soiled with ideological mudslides.

COVID Notes of the Year (13)

It is in the vocational dimension of his life that the seminarian Juan Carlos Pañellas has felt the effects of this time. It is in her that she has had the most positive experiences and where she has suffered most from some realities that make her think a lot about her priestly future. While from Holy Week to today he has been able to bring communions to several people every Sunday (something that makes him very happy), seeing closed temples and under-neglected people in such difficult times has made him reflect, feel the human frailty, and see the contradiction of the ecclesial discourses to be amended.

Alocución de S.E.R. Cardinal Juan de la Caridad García, Archbishop of Havana

In his radio address this Sunday, September 6, Cardinal Juan de la Caridad García, Archbishop of Havana, called for the intercession of the Virgin of Charity of Copper, in the vicinity of his Feast, so that Cuban families may preserve peace. He also requested his assistance from the rulers, the poor and the afflicted. “Free the prisoners; put an end to enmities; make the youth grow in wisdom and sustain and comfort the elderly.” In his plea to the Mother of God, he also included the city of Havana and the sick of the Covid. He recalled that next Tuesday, September 8, he will make an allocution about our Lady of Charity at the usual time, and at nine o’clock at night, the Educational Channel will transfer the televised Mass from El Cobre.

Jubilee year in the midst of the pandemic

The Jubilee celebration for twenty-five years of presence in Cuba at the service of evangelization has been very atypical for the Siervas Missionary Sisters of the Holy Spirit. The arrival of the Covid-19 on the island last March forced them to rethly the planned. Driven by trinitarian spirituality that defines them, they decided to adjust their missionary charism, characterized by the proclamation of the Gospel, and to make it present in spaces where it has not arrived, its knowledge is insufficient or, simply, where it will be needed to collaborate in what is already being done.
