Candid of the house

Shortly after the military revolt that overthrew the populist government of General Juan Domingo Perón in the Argentine Republic, the Cuban magazine Bohemia – then one of the most influential on our continent – included, in its first two editions in November 1955, a poll entitled Opinion on Perón. and on his overthrown regime, through which opinions were gathered from various personalities of our country. Among those voices was that of a priest, Father Ángel Gaztelu, who wanted above all to be the lamp of his own house before lighting that of the other, because having the house to sweep, he was concerned about that interest in dust that of the near. However, he did not stop giving his opinion on the matter in question, and assured him that he was not interested (as a simple citizen) in any policy other than that of a government with all and for the good of all. And as a priest he confessed that he aspired to no more politics than the essential and broad one of the Quevedian concept: “The politics of God and the government of Christ”. […]

XXIV Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

No hemos de esperar de Jesús un Dios que nos quite o resuelva todos nuestros problemas, que aplaste a quienes nos persiguen y calumnian, que acabe con nuestros sufrimientos. Jesucristo ha venido a dar sentido a todo lo que forma parte de la vida cotidiana, a ayudarnos a cargar la cruz de cada día, a encontrar en el darlo todo por Dios y por los hermanos el tesoro que ilumine nuestro rostro de alegría y fecunde nuestra existencia por muy dura que sea. Nuestra fe en Cristo Jesús, convertida en obras de vida como las de Él, es el testimonio que nuestro mundo necesita y espera de nosotros los cristianos. Descubrir la Cruz de Cristo en las cruces de los más pobres y necesitados, en sus heridas y calamidades, resulta imprescindible para acercarnos a ellos con humildad de corazón, sin paternalismos, ni superioridad ni prejuicios humanos, dispuestos a compartir su dolor y a paliar sus necesidades en la medida de nuestras posibilidades. Nadie es tan pobre que no pueda dar al menos una sonrisa, una palabra cálida o un poco de su tiempo a quien sufre más. […]
